Much of my current work centres around the concept of FLOW. Movement in a continuous stream is one of the fundamental organizing principles of existence. It manifests itself in visual and material terms, as in the flow of water and air and the movement of beings. It manifests itself in abstract terms, as in the flow of time, ideas and the energy that runs through all things. Physicists call this essential process of the transfer of energy electromagnetism. Taoists call their version of the prime force Qi (Chi).
To some of us, modern science and ancient Taoism seem compatible with each other. Together they make the sound of two hands clapping, resounding in a world that is so heavily abused by hubris, ignorance, greed and shortsightedness. Like modern, global systems of understanding -quantum physics, genetics, biochemistry, evolutionary theory – Taoism reinforces the idea that humans cannot stand apart from nature, and certainly not aloof. However proud they may be, people cannot break the laws of science and, if they try to do so, the laws of science will break them. We see the of this evidence all around us.
As well as being influenced their philosophy, I am borrowing certain techniques of presentation from the Chinese ... especially the tradition of scroll painting, which was intended to immerse the viewer in nature.
