The matter of these paintings, their facture, surface and structure are part of their meaning. Edges and gaps of paint leave their semi-transparent silk-supports open to reveal the wood construction and wall beneath. The wall will complete any additional hue to the diaphanous parts of the silk surface, as will the wood stretcher-bars and any blemishes they hold.
