Sunrise Palms 2015 (revised 2017)

With the exception of the forward interactions common in adult chat-lines, we don’t normally exchange physical descriptions of ourselves in the hopes to better know others and vice versa. Instead, we fill our conversations with stories and exchange experiences to better understand how we relate, differ and connect with one and other.

My work examines the formation of identity through experiences created and edited by our memories and perspectives. Exaggerated at times, uncanny and never true to life, I emulate these faulty qualities through my impromptually taken analogue photography and bold use of acrylic paint.

In the age of social media and fake news, where external entities are first to be blamed, my work invites an inward view of our own human errors. As we may come to see that we are also the ones trying to kid ourselves.

‘Sunrise Palms’ was taken during the pivotal journey I took back to my home country, the Philippines. Permanently living in the UK and a British citizen, revisiting my homeland at times felt very familiar yet strangely foreign. Always changing, blending and morphing in its pursuit of progress, the double exposure captures this country of contrasts. Moreover, revising this image again in 2017, adds another layer of distortion as I recollect and reconstruct my experiences into memories, amalgamating them altogether creating a new yet familiar landscape.
