Collateral Icon
Ho generato un'espressione che, se pur grottesca, credo possa avvicinarsi a ciò che l'uomo contemporaneo è: l'individuo che cerca sé stesso seguendo le mode del suo tempo, diventando così un essere mostruoso e privo di un’identità concreta. Appropriandomi dell’immagine e “gettandovi” sopra la mia espressione materica, ho trasformato la Barbie in una presenza-spettro ridicola e, al tempo stesso, aberrante; un’Icona Collaterale derivata dall’utopico giocattolo, immortalato su carta patinata, che finalmente muta in essere imperfetto, umanizzato.

In the project “Collateral Icon” I reinterpreted the idea of beauty of the iconic myth of Barbie: the highly idealized doll that marked, and that is still marking, an era. I tried to humanize what the self-asserted icon represents to masses, the object that created the contemporary ideal that links the outer beauty to the personal and public achievement, by taking off what the society identifies with beauty, deleting her face and showing her plastic eyes, instead.
I created an expression that, though grotesque, is thought to be close to what the contemporary man looks like: a person who is looking for him/herself, following the trend of the time, thus becoming an ugly being, without a real identity. By taking the image and casting my expression upon it, I turned the Barbie into a ridiculous ghostly-being and, at the same time, abnormal: a Collateral Icon, generated by the utopian doll, artificially eternalized, that finally turns into something flawed but humanized.
