Rojak

Rojak

Rojak is a highly creative art that comprises the selected few photographs within a three-year period. The word Rojak can be synonymous to Salad; although, of course the root word is derived from some parts of South East Asian regions which means a traditional fruit and vegetable salad dish commonly found in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. In Malaysia and Singapore, the term "rojak" is also used as a colloquial expression for an eclectic mix, particularly as a word describing the multi-ethnic character of Malaysian society.

Rojak is an artistic project talking about the Malaysian society, the beauty and simplicity of a Country where three major races (Malays, Chinese and Indians) living together side-by-side and somehow found a way to set aside their differences. They are different indeed; but, together - that makes Malaysia a good rojak.

All pictures describe the different moments of the journey where faces, episodes and colours tell different stories particularly within Malaysia’s peninsula. But it looks like a single picture is not enough to reveal the complete plot, especially in our era where the movies can tell so much more in clarity. Although, these pictures consist of strong creative process through mixture of different computer effects from text to graphic effects. Additionally, this artwork is supposed to reveal the steps behind creative process with the different steps of artistic and digital manipulation and that original moment disappear and fade away to something unexpected – that, indeed a unique twist and transformation of this rojak.

All the photographs are much more likely to be a novel about the experiences along the way in a tropical country where faces and the patterns are a rojak of different three major cultures in Malaysia. This rojak journey has a beginning but not necessarily has an ending.
