The Person from Porlock Dyptych 1 (Translucent)

This work is one of many I am making which explore the idea of translucence, in which the image responds to light from behind as well as from the front. I am especially interested in placing translucent images close to a source of natural illumination, so that they frequently alter their appearance in response to the movement of light. Thus they are no longer simply pictures in space but objects affected by, and expressive of, their environment.

The images in the ongoing series, The Person from Porlock, are inspired by the work and life of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet, polemicist, political activist and utopian visionary. Like Coleridge, I wish to see deeper into the structures of nature and human society. And, like all his fellow Romantics, I seek to connect the world we inhabit to our deepest desires, ambitions and fears, bringing them together in the crucible of the imagination.
