That Time

That Time

To this day menstrual blood appears to fit into the category of taboo subjects – and as such it can give rise to confusion, misunderstanding and a lack of compassion.

A composition of kiln formed glass and porcelain sanitary towels simultaneously explores purity and staining – both fundamental aspects of how cultures classify women during their menstrual cycle.

A procession of red sanitary towels (in kiln formed glass) embody female experiences. They are raw accounts of recurring episodes – a reminder of the relentless stream of blood experienced by women. Along with rolled up “pure” versions of the towel (in white porcelain) they display what is most often hidden away.

Together the pieces have the ability to simultaneously stimulate discussion while evoking strong emotional responses – they make us look away – and look again.
