Lamia (the Greek version of Lilith)

Lamia (the Greek version of Lilith)

A portrait of the tragic mythological persona of Lamia (Greek equivalent of Lilith). In the myth, Lamia is a mistress of the god Zeus, causing Zeus' jealous wife, Hera, to kill all of Lamia's children. However, she was "cursed" to never be able to shut her eyes so that she would forever obsess over her dead children, Taking pity on Lamia, Zeus gave her the ability to remove and replace her eyes from their sockets. Her gift was the "mark of a Sibyl", a gift of second sight.
The artist has taken advantage of the visual perception's laws to portray a woman without eyes, but yet one possesing a vigorous look.
