TEX28 is the genetic sequence for the ability to see a broader range of color in the yellow spectrum. Humans possess three cone cells that allow us to see color: Red, Green and Blue. Theoretically some women have an extra cone cell - “Yellow” and the ability to see additional shades in the yellow/green spectrum, this ability is called Tetrachromacy. It is impossible for people with three cone color vision to see these additional shades and it is equally impossible for women with this ability to describe and share what they see. This sculpture is a map of the specific gene sequence using the color spectrum of green to yellow that the gene is coded for. There are four colors in this palette that refer to the four amino acids that make the code: A,C,G,T. I have assigned a shade value to each letter and then translated the code into a grid. By using transparent dyes suspended in water the piece covers a much larger range of variation as light passes through the bags. The dyes are food safe, non toxic pigments that can be poured into the water table or ocean without causing harm to plants or animals.
