Gender issues: linocut print
I carved into a lino cut these two figures.
I was inspired by toilet signs indicating male and female and how they are still often associated with women wearing dresses. I decided to convey gender stereotypes we have by creating two figures.
The woman figure is printed in blue, a typically male colour. The lines used are all straight and hard. The patterns hint at her wearing a tie- possibly a business woman. There is a stitching-type effect around her pelvis.
The male figure is in a red/deep red. It uses curved, soft lines. the patterns hint at many things- the HIV/AIDS ribbon symbol on his knees, flower patterns in the breast area.
The print is almost as tall as I am and very detailed. It was a massive piece of linocut to print! Look closely at the detailed patterns I carved.
