Tranquil

Yulia Kovanova‘s work aims to investigate the complex relationship between humans and nature.
The onset of urbanisation can lead to feelings of isolation: by moving closer together we have become disconnected from an essential part of ourselves.
Our unspoken dialogue with nature offers an opportunity to explore this rich and complex relationship and to touch upon something that might never be fully understood. It is this deeper insight into the human condition and how we adapt to life in the world around us that motivates much of Kovanova’s work and her chosen method.
Kovanova creates her work through engaging in a dialogue with nature. She allows nature – in all its intricacy and vastness – make its mark, then adds her own human element. The two co-creators take turns in starting the conversation, leading to different outcomes. Nature’s contribution could be the pattern created by a tree branch moving in the wind, the idle chatter of rain, or a print of the forest floor. The ‘human’ contribution is drawn from Kovanova’s everyday experiences and the multiplicity of daily interactions that help to validate her sense of identity within the world around her.
Yulia is an Edinburgh-based artist whose work aims to explore human-nature relationships and investigate interconnectedness of things with insights from ecology and philosophy. She spent her childhood in Siberia, Russia, on the shores of Lake Baikal and in close proximity to the Taiga forest, where European influences interweave with Asian. It is a place on the crossroads of cultures, set between the wilderness of nature and the hustle and bustle of a city, and a natural source of inspiration for her subject. Through her work, Yulia is searching for ways to be present and connected with the world around, breaking through the human-made barriers that she believes often numb consciousness. www.kovanova.com
