Landscapes of my memory
It is universally known that our mind modifies the memories without our consent, in a way that a new fictitious reality layer covers the real one making it seem more certain than the other one. It is sometimes a self-defence mechanism that helps us to partially forget what hurts us or, more frequently, an effect caused by the passing of time. Memory is submitted to disruptions, to amnesias that led to information gaps. This makes us, in a certain way, lose a part of our vital experience, but it also enriches it making it unique and personal.
In my case, memory related to my childhood is a mixture of memories and imagination. My family moved to Barcelona when I was almost a year old and my living experiences in Soria are reduced to the long holiday periods that I spent with my family. I keep on going to Soria but, with the passing of time, the length of these visits has been reduced due to the obligations of the maturity. In most of them, three places have been repeating like a small obsession: Duero River, Valonsadero Hill and La Cuerda del Pozo Reservoir.
That's why I present this work as a trilogy, in which the three parts: Duero, the river of mi life, Imaginated Valonsadero and La Cuerda del Pozo, explore the layers of these landscapes of my memory.
Since I started this project in 2005, material that I use to make it, have stopped manufacturing: B/W slides and Polaroid film to do the image transfers, and this fact helped me to link my work with the old times that never come back.
In a sort of premonition, I devoted myself to accumulating this material inside my fridge. It has been expiring there, provoking those irregularities and processing defects that have helped me to transmit, in a more faithful way, the effect of passing of time in my memory. This memory that organises in layers which, although belonging to the same memories, don't completely fit together, like in the ones that I present after duplicate and superpose the images.
The work consists of 30 images (10 from each of the three series), taken with an analogue reflex camera and a 28 mm lens, using B/W slides. Afterwards, I reproduced them in Polaroid film to be able to make emulsion transfers in acetate and I framed them between two glasses.
I looked for a material that increases the waters fluidity, their transparency, the delicateness of the trees branches,... that let me, in a certain way, symbolize the structure in fragile layers of how our memories store in our mind, and that at the same time, the result were a bit evocative because I intended to transmit feelings and sensations that I have experimented throughout my life. That's why I have chosen a warm tone in the final images.
