Untitled

The painting "Untitled" from 2008 is based on a still image from one of my films ("I like my Music soothing", 2008), which was based on a performance. It deals with the ritualistic aspects of the painting process, the act of staging an event in an empty space, and creating the atmosphere for an occult or alchemic scene to occur. It goes beyond the boundaries of painting by hinting at the performative and theatrical as well as containing elements of movement and energy usually found in moving image / film work. With this painting I was particularly inspired by the theatrical work of Antonin Artaud and Bertolt Brecht, and the performance work of German artist John Bock.
My approach to the painting medium is "expanded" in the way that I also make films, performances and installations. Going from one type of media to another helps me push through the restraints and limitations of traditional as well as contemporary painting and into new territory.
