Confusao
As an artist I work almost exclusively with an with an anonymised CT dataset called Melanix. Freed from having a personal relationship with the subject I work with scanned body as I would an avatar, constantly reforming and re-materialising her to suit changing ideas and impressions. Although I primarily work as a sculptor, this last series CONFUSAO is combination of digital, photography and painting; I worked with radiology software to export renderings of the scanned body that were then made into internegs to allow me to make large traditional black and white photographs that I could then paint into with photographic bleaches and inks.
In 2011 I moved to Luanda, Angola and since moving to Sub-Saharan Africa I have been motivated by the symbolic resonance of the CT dataset, signifying privilege both in terms of wealth and access to digital technology. I returned to the images of Melanix that radiology software first offered: a scanned body floating in a black vacuum, a weightless void ripe for dreams, nightmares, superstitions, suspicions, myths and rumours which I was able to bleach and paint into the black. In CONFUSAO the anonymised scanned body acts as an avatar performing/presenting/embodying the thoughts and ideas that haunt me.
