Pianola

‘My studio practice involves extensive research and planning prior to em-barking on projects. This research accompanies my production process and influences my problem-solving as part of a creative endeavor. Primar-ily I work in 2D media using graphite and ink. For the Pianola Project, I have translated an early form of analog information technology into my own artistic language. Separately through website development work, I have developed a heightened awareness to the seemingly infinite (and overwhelming) information database that makes up the Internet - into which I am contributing. Okwui Enwezor refers to this as part of the “Archi-val Regime”. It is this information saturation not just online but in libraries, museums and books that I have been exploring. The Pianola project is comprised of hours of detailed drawing that translates into a representation of a 2:57 minute song. It is 18 feet long as a wavelength of sound that translates to 19.0556 hertz; an almost inaudible blip at the very beginning of our hearing spectrum. The performative nature of this project highlights this seemingly infinite information database, but also highlights its parts. Like a book on top of library stack you only find meaning by en-gagement with its contents.’
