Hydrosphere (The Great Wave, after Hokusai)

Hydrosphere (The Great Wave, after Hokusai)

Scultura, Paesaggio, 180x150x25cm
Acrylic monotypes on medical diagnostic film, (X-ray and MRI film), staples

This three dimensional interpretation of the famous Japanese print The Great Wave off Kanagawa, examines our relationship to and impact upon the earth’s aqueous realm. Water surrounds our continents and is essential for the survival of all life forms. At the same time, the sea can encroach upon or recede from our land, often with catastrophically destructive forces. Though nations draw boundaries on maps of the seas, the oceans and atmosphere defy division, presenting a condition of cultural interdependence. In Hydrosphere, printed shards of diagnostic film are reconnected with thousands of staples, evoking this interdependence, and alluding to the issues and challenges we all face in how best to preserve this shared resource.
