Kuonesa_Beyond Seeing

Hovering between reality and imagination, my works raise the question of what the camera can convey of the phenomena that appear before the eye, and probe the limits of vision. The reduction to the visual implicit in the gaze excludes many layers of reality. But what is reality? Any act of seeing contains an expectation of meaning (John Berger). How does the irritation of not knowing change our gaze? Photographs taken in contexts that are more unfamiliar to us than others—these were made in Mozambique—raise such questions with heightened urgency: they demand an answer. I hope that the accidents of analog double exposure will allow me to find what I was unable to “see.”
Kuonesa is Shangaan (a language spoken in Southern Mozambique) for something that goes beyond vision: a different kind of sense will have become possible.
