" Terra Incognita "
In the left screen, we see a woman doing a 2000 piece puzzle. The image she has to recreate is Brueghel's painting "Hunters in the Snow" , which show a party of hunters returning to their snow covered village, in the middle of winter. In the right screen we see a man in a garden, reading alloud the short story, " Terra Incognita ", by Vladimir Navokov.
Both characters, the puzzler and the narrator, seem to be lost in their own worlds, cut out from the exterior, in a mental space that is closed like a bubble waiting to burst...
In this project I was interested in the creation of "ideal mental landscapes"; I wanted to convey a perfectly closed internal space created through acute concentration in the case of the puzzler and through sheer imagination in the case of the reader, and how fragile this "ideal mental spaces" are. Like the main character in the Nabokov story, who is having delirious visions, the two characters in my video are creating their own "perfect worlds", a kind of mirage where they are lost...
