I think the question "what makes an abstract a good one" is close to impossible to answer. But I feel one can give way to one's prejudices and recognise the answer in a work, without the need to articulate it. I see a parallel in music - the condition to which all art aspires etc. Sometimes the expression of a single note can grip ones whole being, or a simple phrase can embody perfection.
Words I find myself using are "density", "presence", "energy" and the most slippery of all "authenticity". I am not at all sure how useful they really are though.
