Monsantra Visits

There is no better time than now to investigate and promote sustainable answers to the dynamics of consumption. Our goal as an artist team is to address current environmental stresses, food shortages, and wasteful practices by linking ecological issues to a diverse array of creative operations and tactics.

The Monsantra Project is named after the Monsanto Corporation, the largest supplier and producer of genetically modified (GM) seed. In order to motivate people to think about their food, where it comes from and where it may be going, we graft various plants onto remote control/robotic bases and release them into the streets to be directed or driven by artists and audiences. Through this curious public intervention we ask communities to consider how subsequent generations of genetic crop modification will look and how this technology will effect the environment and us? Monsantras can be easily placed into public space to engage audiences in shopping malls, farmers markets, parking lots, schools, galleries etc. Relying on the public’s curiosity and using humor and levity as a tool, the Monsantra Project underscores community and fosters discussion with regard to the lack of transparency in food production, uncertain transgenic technologies, and the future consequences of GM food crops at an informative and entertaining level.
