As appose to ‘Virtual Reality’, which functions as a complete substitute to the real world, ‘Augmented Reality’ is an application which combines virtual elements with concrete reality, in real time. Augmented Reality operates interactively, thus enhancing the existing human perception. This term was established by the scientist Tom Caudell in 1990, while defining a virtual show assisting Boeing employees to assimilate electronic components in the company’s airplanes.

The word ‘Augmentation’ is used in various fields: in Psychiatry, it refers to the act of combining various medications in order to achieve better results. In psychology, ‘Augmented Cognition’ is a field that investigates the boundary between human-computer relation, psychology, ergonomics and neuroscience; aiming to create revolutionary human- computerized interactions. Another field is Heraldry- the profession and art of planning, presenting, describing and documenting the coat of arms, which has been at use since the middle ages until today. In this arena, ‘Augmentation’ is a variation or addition of details to the coat of arms, usually granted by a ruler as a favor or an award for excellence.

The augmentation or “addition” in these cases, even if does not apply to technological- virtual aspect of the term or is not directly connected to the computerized environment, aims to improve the quality of human life.

Similar to Science Fiction and fantasy films, the use of the real world as a platform for artificial virtual applications and their combination, generates a coherent and tangible illusion; deceiving the natural senses which determine our outlook on the world. The Augmented Reality technology does not serve as a substitute for the human existence, but enhances the perception of reality and the interaction with the viewer; the virtual objects provide information that cannot be received directly by the five senses.

The works in the exhibition do not use the technology of Augmented Reality. However, they induce a discourse regarding the meaning of artificial amplification of the current perception of reality; blurring the boundaries between human and computer, natural and virtual reality, the loss of control over information mobility and the loss of privacy.

The works by Uri Shapira and Rachel Monosov have a common denominator – the act of Metamorphosis. Each work is based on raw materials (chemical ingredient and seeds) which undergo a transformation in front of the viewer, who also witnesses its final result.

Ran Slavin creates a dialog between dream and reality, eliminating the meaning of time and space, enabling the experience to draw the viewer into a world which can only exist in the artist’s mind. This idea is used by Katja Loher in a different way; she produces actual, three dimensional worlds, in which she “imprisons” the human.

Eliran Vegh and Vered Rosenfeld offer a different perspective on this subject matter, by creating

tributes to classic artists. They alter the painting and etching technique by using graphic virtual elements, exploiting the movement of the video medium, transporting the viewer to the “other level” of the scene; Goya’s bats and Whistler’s mother are resurrected.

Beyond the visual experience, the exhibition in general attempts to deal with the meaning behind the invention and development of Augmented Reality. The art in this case, functions as a discourse platform, exploring the absolute merger of the virtual sphere with the real world and its future impact on the human race.
