An art gallery is a place where a number of works are on display for people to view. The gallery could be showing a private collection (already owned by someone) to get me on the road http://dissertationtbliss.co.uk/ but is most likely exhibiting works that are for sale. So, if you're going to a gallery that is exhibiting on-sale art, it might be visited by art collectors. Others might just want to view art, support a friend who is exhibiting at a gallery, or maybe they're an artist and want to see what others are creating.
