BI.MA. 4 - MARTIAL ARTS : COMBATIVE WORKS

African Dada Resort, Casuarina Road, Malindi, Kenya

29 December 2012 – 28 February 2013

Opening : 29 December 2012 - 17:30

The International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Malindi is back. The fourth edition of the event will be held from the 29th of December 2012 till the 28th of February 2013; the exhibition will open a window on East Africa in comparison with artworks of international artists, coming from all over the world.

Martial arts : combative works is the theme around which rotates the Fourth Biennial, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and organized by La Biennale di Malindi Ltd and Sarenco Foundation. The event, hosted by African Dada Casuarina Resort in Malindi (Kenya), will witness how various artists interpret and deal with situations of war and conflict in their countries.

As stated by Achille Bonito Oliva, "multiculturalism has placed at the center of its strategy the idea of identity, the responsibility that each individual artist has to use his or her language for producing " an art aimed at the world", as Picasso would say. If art is always concerned with catastrophes and the eruption of the individual imagination from the tectonic balance of social language, then this allows us to say that counter-art is inevitable. So all arts become martial arts and the creative process becomes the arrangement of an iconographic arsenal of combative works. "

The International Art Biennial in Malindi 2012 will be enriched by a series of special sections. Among them Focus China, curated by Vincenzo Sanfo, offers a selection of emerging Chinese artists such as Zhang Hong Mei, Mei Xue Ran, He Bei Hong, Xu De Qi, Ma Han, Huang Kehua, Zheng Yi; Transafricana, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, will present a great project of traveling exhibitions of contemporary African art, with artworks by Mikidadi Bush, Seni Camara, George Lilanga, Esther Mahlangu, Kivuthi Mbuno, Peter M. Wanjau.

In addition, a deepening will be reserved for international artists working in Malindi (Hellen Anyango, Luigi Colajanni, Paul Crescenti Mulia Kitivi, Sara Landriscina, Cheff Mwai, John Nzau, David Ochieng, Richard Onyango, Vanni Romoli, Sarenco, Martin Schulz, Alexandra Spyratos, Gian Paolo Tomasi, Mari Verriello) and two African masters such as John Goba and Margaret Majo will be awarded.
