INTERVIEW TO MAREK SCHOVANEK by Marika Vicari
4th July, 2010

Marika Vicari: Art Stays is multidisciplinary and international, we might say a bit like your story. The first question therefore is almost obligatory. Your cultural stimulus are amplified by the fact that you live and work in Berlin, Prague and (?)Canada. Tell me, which air you breathe in these large cities, where are hosted daily events between biennials and international exhibitions of art?
Marek Schovanek: working internationally provides the incentive to re-fresh in ones approach to curatorial as well as artistic problems; the opportunity to work in new places also brings with it environmental inspirations and site specific oppertunities; new people and situational colsaborationc as well as local material possibilities make cycling your studio a constant artistic challenge
MV: Art Stays has become from years display of communication production of contemporary art. In addition to promoting the festival, the artist residency, promotes partnerships with artists, curators, major projects and most recently the summer academy.
In light of this, what do you think, which significance have today Art Stays, especially in comparison with other similar events scattered throughout the world?
MS: the timing of art stays makes it an interesting platform for curatorial exploration: with so many international art institutions viaing for public attention art stays remains viable in that one can use it as a sounding board for more experimental projects and as a test bed for emerging arts

MV:In previous editions, you've been invited several times to Ptuj both as curator and as an artist. The assiduous participation in Art Stays is another face of your constancy in contemporary art. In addition to the visibility that comes out, how do you place yourself in front of this annual event with art? How important was this experience and how much it has been a stimulus to deepen and develop contacts and your artistic research?

MS: during my time at the various art stays events i have had the pleasure of deepening my contact with some very good slovenian artists who over long years have become my freinds: to re-engage with the dialogue in ptuj is also an aportunity to see old friends and talk about progress and see new personal developments

MV: Looking at the artists and the project you submitted for Art Ptuj 2009 always you seem interested in the dialogue between different artistic fields and the migration of forms. What is Art Stays for you? What are the differences and continuity with other projects that you care or you attended?

MS: Art Stays has given me the possibility to try out new combinations and installational constellations - in he context of the festival i have always worked in a cross disciplinary format the artists i chose are then installed to create a very new experience:this factor about developing your program throught on site research and enjoying the energy that comes out of a live development is unique to art stays and a fresh delightful platform

MV: How do you think is important to involve the city in the Festival events? What role does a contemporary artist in the creative process? What are your future plans?
MS: The involvment of an institution is interesting in the case of ptuj because the city is used as the gallery for many on-site projects: the city is encorporated into the event itself because of it;s relative sizes and the way the festival has been developed: the presentation is a trip throught ptuj linking the art event with the various locations-in this sense art stays is unique in that it offers the town it self as a sounding board for the arts.
