On Saturday, June 6 from 5-7PM, wood artist Terry Bachman will host a wine-and-cheese party to celebrate the opening of the new Tangram Gallery that now shares space with his Tangram Woodworks shop/studio at 424 Virginia Avenue in Cumberland. In addition to showcasing his own sculpture and studio furniture, this opening will feature an exhibition of photographs of graffiti art taken by Danielle Mortensen when she encountered it in the London underground. This exhibition entitled “The Walls of Waterloo” offers a rare opportunity to explore several excellent examples of this controversial art form.
Graffiti artists are for the most part, nameless people whose art is made “on the run” very often away from the police and anti-graffiti squads. For graffiti artists a ramshackle brick wall or an underground train station is a perfectly normal place to make art, however risky. Unless you live in London, however, you may never see graffiti art of the quality Danielle Mortensen captures so admirably in her photographs. Spontaneous, edgy and exciting, these street artists are having a notable impact on what defines serious art.
Come see for yourself what several graffiti artists have created on the walls of the Waterloo tube station in London. And enjoy Terry’s new Tangram Gallery. It is about time we have Art on the Avenue!!
