In an effort to further the bonds between Norman, Oklahoma and its sister cities, Norman Arts Council has established Cultural Connections, a program consisting of a series of exhibitions that will bring international artists to Oklahoma and send Norman artists across the globe to share our heritage and history in new places.
The first planned exhibition is Arezzo in Norman, which brings three Italian artists — Enrique Moya Gonzalez, Sara Lovari and Massimiliano Luchetti — to showcase their work at MAINSITE Contemporary Art, 122 E. Main, Norman in Fall 2015.
The exhibition will run from Friday, October 9, 2015 through Monday, November 30, 2015. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, October 9 with a closing reception scheduled for Friday, November 13, 2015. Both of the receptions take place as a part of Norman Art Council’s monthly 2nd Friday Norman Art Walk, a celebration of local artists, shops, galleries, venues and restaurants in Downtown Norman.
Norman Arts Council is also seeking proposals from qualified artists to be included in the Norman in Arezzo exhibit. The exhibit will take place in May 2016 with submissions due on Wednesday, September 30, 2015. NAC will fully fund travel, lodging and a $50 per diem, as well as a portion of exhibition/shipping costs. Applying artists must have lived in Norman for the past 365 days or have exhibited at MAINSITE Contemporary Art since January 1, 2012. The selected artists will be announced at Arezzo in Norman’s opening reception on October 9.
The idea for Cultural Connections hatched between Norman Arts Council’s University of Oklahoma Work Study student Sarah Ex and Norman Arts Council’s executive director Erinn Gavaghan.
“I have had this idea in mind to create some kind of Norman community connection to the sister cities. The arts are, of course, the ideal medium for sharing cultures. Then, the concept for the series really came to life when Sarah studied abroad at the University of Oklahoma’s campus in Arezzo, Italy. There she selected the Italian artists for this October’s exhibit and laid the groundwork to find a location to later show Norman artists there,” said Gavaghan.
“When choosing the Italian artists for the Cultural Connections exhibition, the goal was to be able to show different aspects of Italian culture within the art. The three artists chosen were those whose works portrayed motifs that were relatable across the borders of language and world views to show similarities and differences amongst Italian and American culture, all while maintaining their own individual identity,” said Ex.
Ex and Gavaghan are the co-curators of the Norman and Arezzo Cultural Connections exhibits.
Many OU students have enjoyed rich experiences in Norman’s sister city, but that’s an opportunity that the Norman community at large has not had. Thus the idea to bring Arezzo artists to Norman was conceived, steamrolling into a full program that seeks not only to import works and artists from Norman’s other sister cities in Clermont-Ferrand, France; Colima, Mexico; and Seika, Japan down the road but also to send Norman artists off to these international outposts.
“One of the really exciting things about working with Arezzo for the first in our sister cities series is the chance to build even stronger ties between the community of Norman and the University of Oklahoma,” said Gavaghan. “We are looking forward to working with the College of International Studies and the College of Fine Arts to create student experiences with both the exhibit here in October and in Arezzo in May of 2016.”
Cultural Connections is receiving support from the City of Norman, Republic Bank & Trust, The University of Oklahoma College of International Studies, Kirkpatrick Foundation, Oklahoma Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts and Breck Turkington.
The Library Gallery in MAINSITE will showcase NAC Individual Artist Award winner Corazon Watkins.
