Vanitas (literally translating as 'emptiness') is a form of still life painting practiced in the Netherlands during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The paintings, which often featuring skulls, watches and rotting fruit, aimed to serve as a reminder of the transience of our earthly life.
Sculptor, Matthew Sibley has used this theme as a starting point for a series of brutal and expressive figure sculptures to be shown in the courtyard at 20-21. The sculptures are strongly influenced by his own collection of African artefacts along with his interests in poetry, Greek mythology,
