My formative years were turbulent and dropping anchor in a sea of constant motion wasn't an option. I carried these patterns of upheaval through to adulthood with 45 moves encompassing several countries from the age of 16. More than a year in one place felt like a long time and manifested little sense of “home.” Discovering painting relatively late in life was a revelation and my transient history heavily influences my art.
I work in abstract with a deliberate style that establishes a play between randomness and pattern. Initially allowing the paint to move and flow unhindered, I plot ‘interference agents’ in the mix to place the paint under stress. These agents act as catalysts for change by producing alchemical reactions. The fluid techniques I employ initiate a state of flux and motion while the mediums drive the formation of patterns that connect, disconnect and re-connect. Eventually the patterns stabilise, pockets of order can be discerned within the chaos and the final piece begins to reveal itself.
Something strong and unique is ultimately born from the turbulence and upheaval and the process serves as a reminder of the nature of change and the equal but opposing forces of duality, particularly free-will and destiny which, I believe, shape my own life. Painting is the way I make sense of things, my world and my place within it and “home” is now where the art is.
