Biografia

Born in 1980, Yachi Lai graduated from the Department of Visual Communication Design, Kun Shan University. “You paint truly wonderfully!” – this compliment from her art teacher in kindergarten is still encouraging and preciously held in Yachi’s heart. In her later school years, she got to study more about arts: photography, computer graphics, and graphic and illustration design. And then she has worked on gaming art, cover illustration and female comics. All these experiences accumulate and strengthen Yachi in developing her personal artistic style.

While working on comics, Yachi has been using illustration to record her feelings about the world, and through which practice she realized that in the process of telling stories, she understood herself even further and deeper. With this realization, she now paints from her original pure love of art – that is, to paint with all her heart and to tell stories with her deep emotions.

One of Yachi’s trademarks is her “Hand Gesture Series” in which she portrays all sorts of hand emotions or gestures commonly seen in everyday life. To furthermore bring focus to certain catch phrases that capture our daily sentiments, she develops the “Like Series ” which expresses our respect or admiration for some world celebrities such as Steven Jobs and Marilyn Monroe, and “Applaud Series” which honors the world masters of the art such as Vincent van Gogh or Pablo Picasso. In line with Andy Warhol’s pop art, Yachi uses painting to salute the dailiness, whether consumption or production, while exploring the connection between artistic expression and folk life.

Yachi’s newest series “In light of Chang Dai-Ch’ien ‧The World as It Was,” as the title shows, is inspired by the late Chinese painting master Chang Dai-Chi’ien, whose artwork is distinguished for its magnificence and poetics, while establishing her own uniqueness. In this new series, she integrates Chinese classical landscape painting with elements of modern civilization, such as skyscrapers or landmark architectures, to address the life pursuit, style, and taste of modern people. These civilization landmarks also bring out the ambiance of prosperity and abundance.
