New technologies have transformed the notion of intimacy and interpersonal communication in fundamental ways. Our conceptualization of distance, both emotional and physical, between us as individual bodies seems to have changed our understanding of how physical entities create and influence spaces of communication.
My work scrutinizes the use and the representation of one’s body in online communications. What relationship do we have with our own flesh and with the one of those we exchange with? And how does this shape our definition of identity or self-identity? In my projects I want to question the place of the physical body in the digital space but also the repercution of virtual communication on our representation of the self and of the other.
Using different techniques resembling “cadaver exquis” and “Chinese whisper” I aim to scrutinize the possibility of a self without definition. I try to generate anonymous bodies difficult to define in space or time, a kind of multi-layered identity that would enjoy its virtuality while missing its physicality. Working mainly with moving images I often apply found or commissioned images, texts or sounds that re-mix with other materials in order to create unexpected relationships. Oscillating between fiction and reality, objectivity and absurdity, the stories told in my works are often full of contradictions and non-sense, pointing out the ambiguity and difficulty of creating a genuine definition of oneself. By playing with stereotypes and misunderstandings, I intend to confuse the viewers, leading them to a deeper reflection about human beings and the epoch we live in.
