Robert Quance is a mixed-media visual artist whose work encompasses a variety of mediums and materials such as digital/analog photography, painting, textiles and ephemera.
The latest self-portrait displays the artist pulling a mask away from his face with his back towards a mirror.
The mask represents our public persona. The movement captured in the mask makes it appear as a "living thing". The artist is actively shedding this facade for the photo.
Our reflection in a mirror can expose our deepest insecurities. The artist has turned his back to mirror, not willing to subject himself to his usual critique. He is engaged only with the camera in an attempt to reveal a glimpse of another, perhaps truer "self".
