Biografia

The Renaissance Project.
I am researching the techniques of the Renaissance artists, and their contemporary counterparts who paint today using classical skills. I am incorporating these skills into a part of my own practice. In particular the florentine technique of under painting in verdaccio. I use my family as models for my figurative work. I also combine photographic images which I had taken at different periods of time and combine them into a photomontage. Some of these are works in their own right, while others are created to be a visual reference for a work in oils.

I enjoy exploring contemporary abstraction, which gives me a creative alternative. The looser style can be a liberating alternative to the precision required in classical realism, and allows me to indulge in a freer, more expressive form of painting.

My interest in photography began in 1982, and in addition to being a form of creation which I am passionate about for it own sake, it also ties my work together in the present.
