"If my work speaks for itself, why should I interrupt?" Robert Louis Stevenson is reported to have asked. And as many others have pointed out, if artists were good at writing artists’ statements then they’d be writers and not artists. Lord knows there is an awful lot of bad writing in the art world. But it is helpful when artists provide a statement that clarifies or provides a context within which to view the work.
Like many artists I am drawn to the later afternoon light, often golden or pinkish, as the sun lowers in the sky. Before this special light begins to disappear it sometimes intensifies and you see it catching just the tops of certain buildings. And so I find myself admiring some part of a building I might not normally stop to notice. From the street level these perspectives can create some fascinating geometry of diagonals and receding planes, geometry that holds my attention.
These paintings aren’t just about architecture or nostalgia for the way we used to design and build. I’m an abstract artist who needs the template of realism to find compositions worthy of further meditation.
So there is the 'artist's statement.' Now, an artist's question: See anything you like?
