Biografia

Born 1978 in Tehran, Iran. Currently lives and works in Iran.

Shay Mazloom studied bachelor of Graphic Design and Master of Arts in Iran before temporary moving to Australia. Having started her career as a painter, she completed her masters in field of painting in University of Sydney. During this time she began to work with video installation and performance. The experience of living within two different cultures has informed a practice that explores themes of gender identity, cultural identity, language, displacement and concepts of borders. Her works are focused on the complex and multilayer interconnection of culture and identity, and the effects of social discourses on individuals, especially on women. Her physical presence in her works, although desexualized and anonymized, undergoes an ongoing and continual process of undoing and redefining the conditions of her existence within shifting contexts. Her recent works refer to her personal experience of departure and return and are affected by postcolonial notions about “the geography of the mind”.
