I draw to awaken the voices that fade when reality intrudes.
During my studies with William Scharf, who was an assistant to Mark Rothko (during Rothko Chapel), I started to develop a series of principles to define a methodology for biomechanical abstraction. My more recent paintings use this form of abstraction which employs both expressionist and geometric techniques, and is based on the rules and theories of mechanics and physiology. Within the projection of a 3 dimensional system onto a 2 dimensional surface, sources of gravity and light are assigned and influence form and direction of mark making. The goal is an attempt to reconstruct the subconscious gestures and compositional balance inherent in abstract painting.
