In the realm of memory, as in historical terms, place can be the most tangible and lasting experience, directly related to the passage of time, not unlike a portrait taken at a particular moment in one’s life. Seeing and recognizing a place is less fleeting and subjective than experiences of taste, touch, sound, or smell. Seeing is believing, in some cases.
A place can be a physical location or it can be constructed by the imagination, or memory. Place can be an edifice. Buildings each have a particular function and purpose, which can be redefined, repurposed, or abandoned. Some are temporary, others are made to last long term, stabilizing a point of reference for new memories and created histories.
Buildings have their own stories to tell, where potential generations of habitants can experience life within the confines of the spatial container as a framework for creating memories. They become places where we pass time, places that evoke certain emotions based on experiences, places where a collective memory can be formed and shared, places we come home to or stray far away from.
