“I Love You” or “Elephant Juice”?

My work explores areas of personal interest and concern to me, through which I aim to challenge audience’s perceptions by utilizing humour, while still provoking serious contemplation through quirky and ambiguous imagery.

My disability can frustrate me greatly in the sense that I often do not grasp the subtleties of spoken conversation; throughout childhood, my deafness frequently excluded me from the interactional codes and conventions that are the norm to most of the hearing world. Even now, I still retain that sense of being ‘outside’ the reality of what the majority experience. As a result of this, my interpretation of an experience can be vastly and even comically different. My art explores the relationship between the amusing and the tragic aspects of this isolation.
