Biografia

My approach to creating art employs close visual examination, intuition, spontaneity and chance. The resulting work is rooted in my personal interpretations of the natural world. I collect shells, seed pods, leaves, bones and dried plants. I study them in detail and sketch interesting parts. Sometimes I will sketch shapes from several sources to create a new shape. These studies are then distilled and recorded into a study. The real and imaginary fragments become an inventory of private symbols. The substrate is a layering of textures and paint, sometimes old paintings that I scratch or carve back into with a linoleum cutter or Exacto knife. I especially enjoy finding hidden connections in the imagery. In the finished work a puzzle has been completed.
