About the artist
Artist Olé Viravong Scovill is a native of the Lao PDR and a graduate in visual art from the Mahasalakham University in Thailand in 2000. She has been drawing and painting from a young age, inspired by her father who was a professional photographer and her mother who also studied art. Olé’s works are mostly acrylic paintings, photography, and installations – and most recently performance art. Her themes usually involve dark and colorful depictions of the female form and explore the broad spectrum of the female experience. Olé moved to California in 2004 and continued producing her art there, being fortunate to show her works across the US. In 2013 she returned to Laos where her work is pushing boundaries and moving the local art scene forward. Olé hopes that her art inspires women to break through the limitations imposed by society and express themselves in their own way.
Olé Scovill Artist Statement
“My constantly changing style of art is my best way of releasing what is in my head for others to see. I like being able to express myself in new ways and create something that started out as a feeling or a thought and turn it into something that even I might not have expected. Most of my recent works come from trying to turn music and dance and the rhythm of life into an image. They’re inspired by what I feel, which is usually joy from seeing the beauty of the modern world and human society around me – but not always. Sometimes it is anger, sometimes lust, and more often it is an emotion that I can’t describe with words.”
The concept of my work
My art tends to focus on women and expressing their experience. I wish for women to be able to share their minds -- even the dark parts. Art is a way to express our personal emotions that we can't talk about in a way that others can feel, like love and happiness, or even as a release of our anger and depression. I hope it will let men understand women as well, and maybe if we can express ourselves and understand each other better we can become stronger together.
