Biografia
Susie Mendelsson is a figurative artist who has been influenced by the German expressionists as well as medieval art.
In common with the expressionists, Susie’s goal is always to focus on internal feelings rather than anatomical accuracy. At first sight these inner lives can appear ugly or even violent, but she aims to find the beauty in such expressions of basic humanity.
Susie is fascinated by the masks we wear to hide our innermost thoughts and fears. Inspired by myth and folk tales, her work speaks of the hidden worlds and vulnerabilities that we reveal in unguarded moments.
Much of Susie’s work is motivated by an exploration of personal memories and the expression of psychological states of trauma and anxiety. Though the sources of her imagery are often autobiographical, her work communicates universal concerns and emotions, especially from a woman’s perspective.
Susie usually works in 2D using paint and mixed media, always on paper and in series of at least 10 images. However, recently she has moved away from painting into 3D, but still using her favourite medium of paper.
Susie is continuing to explore her common themes of human vulnerabilities, frailties, fears and dreams, but in 3D using recycled paper on wire supports.
Throughout history models of the human figure have been used as power objects channelling and focusing invisible forces.
