Written paintings
Coming from philosophy, it’s only natural that the texts put themselves into image before me. Firstly in the somnolence of long studious evenings where the page became animated by thousands of movements like so many genetic codes squirming hither and thither. Then letters become white on a page become black became the sole signs of this passage from philosophy to painting.
Understood as part of a broader movement in which image, everywhere, supplants text, the latter can save itself only by becoming in turn an object of painting as was the destiny of so many other traditions. Thereby words, phrases, chapters, indents, ellipses, all found their place and meaning in space. Some rising, others descending, in the circle, the square, the curve and the line. Texts attempted to save their skin through poise, by playing landscapes.
