Biography
Victoria Cantons is a London-based artist interested in the tensions between the figurative and the abstract, combined with an exploration of process and materials. Using her own symbolic language Cantons explores love, fear, despair, desire, hunger, emotional poverty and depravity in her art as a springboard to deeper truths about the individual. She sees art not only as an opportunity to explore questions regarding how we respond to the world we live in and how we interact with each other but also as a form through which to contemplate the internal and external struggle with life.
Her paintings also draw on historical Western art at key stages of historic social transition, prominent among these are ancient Greek tragedian plays, Dutch Golden Age still life painting, twentieth century American Abstract-Expressionism, German and American Neo–Expressionism and twentieth century film, theatre and photography.
