Philip V D'mello, more popularly known as the Vasaiwala after the place of residence , belongs to Kupari community(vasai) whose life is guided by traditional customs and
governed by deep rooted social values...
He laments the time when folks of his community enjoyed activities like picking flowers, tending cattle, harvesting; children amused themselves with playing hopscotch, whirling tops, flying kites or rocking pleasantly on the swing. For the adult D'mello these magical moments of childhood hold a deeper significance than being a merely an era of carefree innocence.
With a simple compositional format, pleasant earth colours which are so apt for his themes, Philip D Mello allows us a wonderful glimpse into his world so we too can enter the world of our childhood and sway gently into joys of long lost memories.
