Biography

Jolene Mok (b. 1984) was born and raised in Hong Kong. An experimental artist, she takes video, film, photography and new media arts as her major creative platforms. Mok earned her M.F.A. in Experimental & Documentary Arts at Duke University. She has been exposed to an interdisciplinary learning and working environment since her undergraduate education in the School of Creative Media through her major in the Critical Inter-Media Laboratory.

Mok takes both practical and theoretical components as interconnected aspects throughout her creative process. She is eager to experiment in a variety of ways in the communication of her ideas. Mok is open and always ready to play with and incorporate emerging situations or technologies in her artistic pursuits for the generation of unexpected, meaningful outcomes.

Since 2006, Mok’s works have been shown in film & video festivals worldwide. Her other digital creations have traveled to academic conferences in Finland, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Brazil, & U.S.A. In 2010, she received the Grant for Emerging Artist in Cross/Multi-Disciplinary Arts from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Mok was selected by Arteles Art Center in Haukijarvi, Finland to participate in an Artist-in-Residency Program for a local community project in 2011. In 2012, she was invited as one of the guest resident artists for a major scientific research expedition to explore deep-sea seeps off Barbados. In 2013, she will be joining The Arctic Circle for an Art & Science expedition sailing the waters of the intl. territory of Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago just 10 degrees from the North Pole.
