Biography
Ian Alden Russell is a curator, designer, and educator. Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, he moved to Dublin, Ireland in 1998. He completed a B.A. and Ph.D. at Trinity College Dublin, studying history and archaeology. During his doctoral research, he apprenticed as an art technician at the Douglas Hyde Gallery. This led to a career as an independent curator. In 2010, he moved to Providence, Rhode Island to join the arts communities of Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. There he served as curator of the David Winton Bell Gallery and on the executive committee for the Granoff Center for the Creative Arts. In 2013, he moved to Istanbul, Turkey to join the faculty of Koç University. There he curated An Innocent City responding to Orhan Pamuk’s Museum of Innocence. He is the author of many publications on contemporary art, archaeology and heritage, and has held major fellowships at Brown University, University of Notre Dame, and University College Dublin.
