Biography
Concepts relating to place, and the relationship between place and artwork, are central to my practice. I grew up in the stark emptiness of Northern Scotland's flow country; an experience that has directed my awareness towards land that is untamed, unpeopled and bleak.
Avoiding the direct medium of landscape representation, I explore the nature of place obliquely, using living things to personify the inhuman energy of the land: the earthy, unseen complexity of it that goes beyond what is knowable or accessible. Birds, to me, are a living epitome of this aspect of landscape; native inhabitants of a vast inhospitable space at the edges of human awareness, that is knowable only to themselves as an integral part of it.
