Biography

Barbara Cammarata is a Sicilian artist living and working in Caltanissetta. She approaches the question of cultural identity in her work with humor and provocation. She said that the place where she was born, Sicily, is a land of dominations and subjugation, precariousness, insecurity and bullying, of favoritism and protectionism.

She executes her works with a raw physicality, using material such as paint and charcoal in an unorthodox way, often painting over drawing and vice versa

She is interested in how artists manipulate the visible in their works by which they create ambiguity between the seen and the unseen, the known and the unknown, the said and the unsaid. There is a very thin boundary between them and it represents the most exiting part to her gaze. Her work is able to improve your desire and your interest and at the same time it can disgust you or to let you go away.

Her work is a combination of hidden figures and hidden symbols that are both part of her culture. Painting is the better way to express her thoughts and feelings. It is through the vibrant brush strokes that she can convey them into a canvas. Painting is a way to saying the unsayable. Usually the narrative become a tool and not the center of her work, the narrative offers a re-reading of personal history while raising question of nation and identity in today's world.
