Biography
My paintings hinge around the physical (skin, flesh etc.), psychological (desires, fantasies) and extended body (house, immediate surroundings). In earlier works this was which my own nude body painted in a way that heightens a sense of voyeurism/exhibitionism on the part of the viewer through the use of scale and cramped interior spaces. In more recent works I have explored the absence of the body by working from pornographic stills where I have erased the actors and actresses.
My paintings have been described as occupying "a psychic or inner space, complex stories that continue to evoke and inward-looking replete with imagined situations and layers of psychosomatic content." I am concerned with an inner, psychological dynamic but I am also interested in referencing art history, whether through the handling of my paint or through visual echoes of classical subject matter. I pay great attention to detail and lighting to impart an atmosphere that is usually ambiguous, moving from the desirable to the unsettling.
