Biography
Saul Costa was born in Vicenza in 1974. He studies at the school of art Istituto Statale d’Arte “Michele Fanoli” in Cittadella, attending the course of Commercial art and Photography. He widens and completes his artistic education attending the painting course at the Accademia di Belle arti of Venice and in 1998 he graduates defending his thesis on Tono Zancanaro. The interest and the attentive study of the works of Zancanaro allow Saul Costa to elaborate since his beginning an intense graphic sign, a pure outline that defines the image, artistic measure of his works, which ranges from graphic art to painting, to ceramics decoration.
During the years of the Accademia Saul gets closer to several artistic experiences, including video art, winning national awards as emerging artist ( national RAI competition “Supergiovani Arte” 1997). His passion for history of art, most of all for the huge Veneto tradition, his several travels around the Mediterranean area and the intellectual maturity bring him to favour the classical and primitivism subjects, related both to the themes developed and the techniques used.
In 2006, at Villa Barbarigo of Noventa Vicentina, was held the first solo exhibition, titled “Lisca in Faccia” -Fishbone on the face- ( the provocative titled of the exhibition hints at the mark which the author signs with on the back of his paintings). In the same year, with Corpo animale- Animal Body- the artist develops, further on, his interest for mythology and for the animal universe in its metaphoric and mutant component. With Mitotaurus (2010), in the prestigious context of the Castello Inferiore di Marostica ( Lower Castel of Marostica), Saul reaches a new linguistic maturity: the research goes through the deep and mysterious lands of primitive and archaic, with large dimension works in which color and matter obtain a strong expressive charge. Following few months the artist exposes at Galleria Arianna Sartori of Mantova, obtaining further positive feedbacks by the public and the critics. He currently works and lives in Lisiera (Vicenza).
