Biography

My current paintings use the form of hexagons, which give the illusory three sided appearance of cubes. Within these three ‘sides’ I partake in bringing together contrasting approaches to abstract painting. Particular attention is given to the layering, finish and colour of paint within each plane. Gloss sheens and gold paint draw attention to the physical nature of the work, whilst transparent layers of colour create an illusory depth. I aim to upset the initial illusory appearance of cubes by setting changes in pattern to the formal and physical nature of the painting.

In these paintings form is reduced to ‘tesellatable’ planes, which are used as frameworks for various languages of painting. The artworks are a confusion of art histories, combining the repetition of minimalism, op and pop art with the handmade nature of abstract painting.
